For those who haven't been reading for 14 years; this is the very first HATBG strip, which is in an English 200 class. The strip appeared in January 1994.

By February 1995, BG was being offered a job as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at SMU.

The daily strip ended shortly thereafter, and when the weekly picked up, BG was back at Ole Miss as some sort of counselor.

To be sure, we've sat down and figured out how it all makes sense, but this strip was fun anyway. Very much a comics-geek joke.

On the more recent front, Seth's master first and last appeared almost three years ago, and the experimental time machine, which dates back to the old daily HATBG strips, last popped up in October 2005.

As we were planning the Giant Plot Arc, one of the issues of discussion was whether it was too much to have it actually be two different storylines at once. Ultimately, we decided to go with it. At the end, there will be a new status quo that will let us do some new things, so it'll all be good.

Way back in 2006, we had a punchline.

Well, not even a complete punchline, just a phrase, maybe half a punchline -- "where the Magic happens."

To use it, though, we really needed a new character. The earliest sketches of Suzie, before she even had a name, were saved as "Magic Girl," based on that punchline.

So, after literally months of set-up -- well, OK, weeks of set-up broken up by months of doing other stuff -- here, finally, is the strip.

And for those who have commented on the Giant Plot Arc series being a downer, it does get better.

But not until after it gets worse.

See, this is how dedicated we are to the big plot arc we've undertaken -- This week's strip wasn't original part of the story, but rather was inspired by recent real-life events which we won't get into here.

Rather than just creating it as a stand-alone strip, though, we've incorporated it into the plot arc. You'll notice how it deftly works in the Seth/Suzie/Clive story, while at the same time foreshadowing that ... but that would be telling. Never mind.

Believe it or not, we're actually serious about it. This kicks off a multi-week story arc that is not only the longest story we've ever done, but also will bring about changes in the Hatbag universe.

The whole thing is even written in advance, save for a punchline here or there, but who needs those, right? No point in starting to change now.

No promises, though, that we'll run the whole thing sequentially; we'll probably take breaks every now and then for non-plot-arc strips.

And, knowing us, we can't guarantee that we won't get bored with it and drop it mid-stream. But that would involve writing new scripts instead of using the ones we've already written, so laziness is actually in favor of finishing the story.

Six Words To Rule Them All

Given the high literary quality of this week's strip, I'm sure it will come as no surprise that it owes its origins to Ernest Hemingway.

Way back in the day, Hemingway wrote the following story: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." He is said to have called it his best work.

In November, WIRED did a feature where they challenged celebrities to follow in Hemingway's footsteps and write their own six-word stories.

Early this year, David started a thread on his blog for posting six-word stories.

Which led, ultimately, to this six-word Hatbag.

This strip, in turn, made us wonder what it would be like if we had always written Hatbag in this format, so we went back and modified old strips into six-words miracles of brevity.

For us here at Hatbag, this week's news was a like a visit from an old friend. An old friend who was accused of killing people and apparently is completely losing it, but nonetheless.

The Trial of the Century took place during the daily run of HATBG, and, yeah, we mined it for ideas from time to time, in strips like this and this.

When we went back after the strip ended and did some Web-exclusive installments, we even revisited him again.

Basically, this strip just kinda summed up our relationship with the whole thing.

For the new folks in the audience -- and by new we mean those who weren't reading a decade ago -- this marks the first time in Hatbag that we've brought back one of the old HATBG characters other than the three leads. We were excited about doing this, and it was a lot of fun updating one of the old characters into the new art.

In fact, it's kind of appropriate that the Prof be the fourth character from the old strip to appear in the new, since he was the fourth character ever introduced in HATBG, way back in the very first week.

There would be too many strips to link to chronicle the entire professor-student relationship from those days, but we will note that the book he's reading sounds like a follow-up to one of his earlier works.

The Prof was also one of the last characters to appear as the daily strip drew to a close. He also appeared in an early weekly strip, though apparently he just flew back in to the country for that event, based on this later appearance, which was apparently his last time to pop up in a regular strip. (He did pop up in a Hatbag bonus feature, but that doesn't really count.)

Lest anyone think we don't do our research, here's a link where you can order your copy of Darkwing Duck, Volume 1, which will be released on Tuesday.

And for those new to the strip, the whole Darkwing Duck thing goes way back (twelve and a half years) to the first month of the old HATBG strip, and popped up a few more times over the course of the daily strip. Even the beginning of the weekly strip featured Darkwing. (And we're not entirely sure that's all of the appearances.)

This appears to be the first Darkwing Duck reference in the new Hatbag strip, though, amazingly enough.

His buddies were nestled all snug in their cribs,
With visions of Mountain Dew, Skittles, and ribs.
And Seth in his PJs that showed Mr. T
Had just settled down in his unique IP.

When out in the street there arose such a ruckus,
Seth sprang from his chair, knocking over his Zuckuss.
Away to the window he flew like The Flash,
A complete run of whose comic was safe in Seth�s stash.

The moon on Seth�s car, all Dr. Who-stickered,
Gave a glimmer like magic as off them it flickered.
When what to Seth�s wondering eyes should appear,
But a flying DeLorean with robot reindeer.

With a little old driver, such a tech-laden elf,
That Seth knew it must be Mr. Apple himself.
More rapid than broadband his coursers they came,
And, linked to them with Bluetooth, he called them by name!

"Now, H4x0r! Now, Lucas! Now Shatner and Tolkien!
On Gygax! On Torvalds! On Bendis and Whedon!
To the top of the porch! Don�t mind the firewall!

As back issues that in the big comics sale fly,
Before collectors raise their price to the sky,
So up Seth�s house-top the coursers they flew,
With a bunch of nerd swag, and St. EveJobs too.

And then, in a twinkling, Seth heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each nerdy hoof.
As he reached for his phaser, his face Yoda-green,
Down the modem came Jobs, and right out through the screen

He was dressed casually, from his head to his foot,
And his mock turtleneck was as black as the soot.
With a bundle of toys to dole out from his sack,
As quick as a row of Xserves on a rack.

His eyes � how they twinkled! His glasses how trendy!
His smile was like Mork, his composure like Mindy!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And his cool six-day stubble was flecked as with snow.

A tiny iPod he had tucked in its sheath,
And the white earphones circled his head like a wreath.
His West Coast physique had no hint of a belly,
And he radiated cool like Arthur Fonzarelli.

He was techno and hip, a right nerdy old elf,
And Seth laughed as he showed him his figurine shelf.
A wink of Jobs� eye and a twist of his head
Told Seth that his love of toys soon would be fed.

He opened his pack and brought out many things,
Complete sets of both Star Wars and Lord of the Rings,
A soldering kit, and a Wi-Fi detector,
And a cardboard stand-up of Hannibal Lector.

A Trinity doll, in all her skin-tight black finery,
And a set of droll T-shirts, with slogans in binary.
A new MIDI keyboard, a case of Diet Cokes,
And The Omnibus Big Book of Microsoft Jokes.

As the last of the nerd loot piled up on the floor,
He brought out the batteries � fifty or more!
And then, turning the switch on his belt back to Play,
He gave Seth a grin, and beamed back to his sleigh.

Jobs booted his team, and as they leapt towards the moon,
Seth saw a bumper sticker: I (Heart) Kakrafoon
And he heard Jobs exclaim, as he warped into night,
�One more thing: Happy Nerdmas, and to all an iSight!�

So when we started the new strip, we knew it was just a matter of time until we brought back the time machine, which previously appeared in both the daily HATBG run and the weekly strip. (And each time, when we stopped doing the strip, people probably thought we didn't really mean the "To Be Continued..." bit.)

We also obviously tried one other new thing with this week's strip. We've been formatting them as if it were still a conventional newspaper strip, working with a preset frame. This one takes advantage of the fact that we're working on the Web, and have infinite space. We'd be interested to hear what you think of the experiment.

I (David) have always loved this idea, since I read a review of the Dana Carvey amnesia comedy Clean Slate (or Blank Slate, or something), in which the writer claimed to have watched the movie multiple times, having her memory erased each time so that her opinion after each viewing was not biased by the previous ones. Even so, her negative notes each time were pretty much unanimous.
It just seems to me that would be a really cool thing to do with the Star Wars trilogy, to be able to go into it like you'd never seen it before. To experience the wonder of seeing that opening shot of the Star Destroyer for the first time. To be shocked to learn that Vader is Luke's father. How cool would that be?

As best we can tell, the pet weasel was first introduced when it died.
But, then, a few months later, there was talk of sharing a meal with the weasel, so apparently he got a new one.

And, of course, the weasel was mentioned again in the first of the new strips two weeks ago.

And today we're finally getting to another of the ways that Hatbag differs from Hippie and the Black Guy.
During the entire run of HATBG, the major characters never had names. Occasionally, people that didn't appear in the strip were referred to by name, but to the best of my recollection, only once was a character that we actually saw in the strip given a name; and she was just a cameo.
But, for Hatbag, the characters now have names. This is the first time one has been used; the character once known (though not in the strip) as Hatbabe, it turns out, is Jenny.

For those of you just joining us, this strip is a throwback to the old nighttime strips that we used to from time to time.

The first incident actually was from an old daily strip, and the second incident was from a bonus strip which may or may not have been published, and was the last nighttime strip.

And, of course, this strip is Origin 3, because the first daily strip was Origin and the first weekly strip was Origin 2.
