                <center><img src="http://alltheseworlds.net/images/shot-out-of-a-canon.jpg" alt="Hatbag by David Hitt and Lain Hughes comic shot out of a canon webcomic"></center>For those who haven't been reading for 14 years; this is the <a href="http://hatbag.net/dailies/001Origin.html" target='_blank'>very first HATBG strip</a>, which is in an English 200 class. The strip appeared in January 1994.<br />
<br />
By February 1995, BG was being offered a job as <a href="http://hatbag.net/dailies/205theresume.html" target='_blank'>Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at SMU</a>.<br />
<br />
The daily strip ended shortly thereafter, and when the weekly picked up, <a href="http://hatbag.net/weeklies/960530origin2.html" target='_blank'>BG was back at Ole Miss as some sort of counselor</a>.<br />
<br />
To be sure, we've sat down and figured out how it all makes sense, but this strip was fun anyway. Very much a comics-geek joke.<br />
<br />
On the more recent front, Seth's master first and last appeared <a href="http://comics.hatbag.net/pivot/entry.php?id=32" target='_blank'>almost three years ago</a>, and the experimental time machine, which dates back to the old daily HATBG strips, last popped up in <a href="http://comics.hatbag.net/pivot/entry.php?id=72" target='_blank'>October 2005</a>.

		<summary type="text">God Rest Ye Nerdy Gentlemen
God rest ye, nerdy gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay:
Alien vs. Predator
Opens on Christmas Day
In an attempt to save franchises
Which had gone astray

And I hear they have a Pred-alien, Pred-alien
Yes, I hear they have a Pred-alien....

Palpatine Is Coming To Town
Oh, you'd better not pout, you'd better not cry
You better watch out, I'm telling you why:
Palpatine is coming to town.

He's learned from the Sith,
He's checked it all twice,
His side of the Force
Is naughty, not nice:
Palpatine is coming to town.

He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake,
He knows if your body's burned up
In a far-away molten lake.

So you better get out, you'd better take off,
Quit your Jedi job, study to be a Moff:
Palpatine is coming to town.

Suzie, The Red-Haired Shopgirl
Suzie, the red-haired shopgirl,
had a very cozy store.
And if you ever saw her
you would want to read lots more.

All of the other store guys
used to come and browse her books.
And the comic shop owner
always gave her flirty looks.

Then one foggy Nerdmas Eve,
Seth came to say,
"Suzie, with your wares on shelves,
Won't you sell me a book with elves?"

So he bought The Silmarillion,
And said as he took it with glee,
"Suzie, the red-haired shopgirl,
won't you go out with me?"

The Nerdmas Song
Chess game going by an open fire,
Jack Black in your DVD.
Life Day carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Mr. T

Everybody knows
A turkey and some MST
Help to make the season bright
Tiny Jawas with their eyes all aglow
Will steal away your droids tonight

They know that Steve Jobs' on the way
He's got a lot of toys to show on Macworld Day
And every mother's nerd will spy
To see Batman can fight off Brother Eye.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
For geeks from one to forty-two:
Although it's been said in Klingon and by dwarves:
Merry Nerdmas to you.

Gandalf The Wizard

Gandalf the Wizard
Was a jolly, happy soul
With a long thin pipe and a pointy noise
And halfling-weed in his bowl

Gandalf the Wizard
Was known as Gandalf the Grey
But the hobbits knew
The things he could do
When he came round the Shire way.

There must have been some magic
In that ring that Bilbo found
For when he place it on his hand
The plot began to move around

Gandalf the Wizard
Was as wise as he could be
So he said let's go
To the young Frodo
And let's toss that ring away

Partway to Mordor
He protected Frodo well
Then they fought some ghouls,
He said "Run, you fools"
And down in the mine he fell

He fell right down the chasm
And that ol' Balrog he fought
That fire demon put a good fight up
But his fighting came to naught

Gandalf The Wizard
Fell a long long way that day
All charged up with might
He got bleached all white
So, so long Gandalf the Grey!

Whumpity whump whump
Whumpity whump whump
Look at Galdalf go!
Whumpity whump whump
Whumpity whump whump
With his big beard of snow!

Comic Books
Dashing to the store
In the afternoon Wednesday
'Oer the roads we go,
Geeking all the way
Wearing Green Lanterns' ring
To make our spirits bright
What fun it is to browse and shop
At the comics shop tonight!

Comic books, comic books
Comics all for me!
Oh, what fun it is to read

Cyber Wonderland
E-mail pings,are you listenin'?
On the screen, something's glistenin'
A beautiful site
On Google tonight
Browsin' through a cyber-wonderland

Dial-up was slow as quicksand
Here to stay is the broadband
It streams data down
So I can be found
Browsin' through a cyber-wonderland

On the Facebook we can view some people
And pretend that we are really swell
They'll say "Are you married?"
We'll say "No, man!
At least, that is,
As far as you can tell."

Later on, we'll conspire
To steal songs with Limewire
We'll face unafraid
The R-I-A-A
Browsin' through a cyber-wonderland....</summary>

And this strip marks the end of the Giant Plot Arc that we wrote back in July. The groundwork we've laid, though, will give us fodder we'll be working with for a while.

<br />
SETH and HERBERT are outside Guy's house. Herbert is standing in a giant flaming pie.<br />
Herbert: Are you sure about this, boss?<br />
Seth: Hey, <a href="http://abbeyrd.best.vwh.net/named.htm"  target='_blank'>it worked for The Beatles.</a><br />
(Alternately, Herbert could be dressed as a giant bat hanging on a string, and Seth could say Batman.)<br />
<br />
Seth and Herbert tilting at a windmill? in appropriate dress?<br />
Seth dressed as Ahab and Herbert dressed as white whale, in Guy's front yard<br />
<br />
Seth: I AM THE GHOST OF JOHN GRISHAM, COME TO GIVE YOU INSPIRATION, GUY!!<br />
Guy: Seth, John Grisham's not dead.<br />
Seth: Oh. Then I got nothing.<br />
<br />
Seth (on roof): Okay, now, ring the doorbell. When he comes out, I'll drop this apple on his head. <br />
Herbert: Boss, I'm telling you, Newton wasn't a novelist.<br />
<br />
Herbert's up on the roof with a powerful spotlight and a megaphone. <br />
"Are you sure about this, boss?"<br />
"Worked for St. Paul!"

Ultimately, we decided to go with it. At the end, there will be a new status quo that will let us do some new things, so it'll all be good.

<br />
Well, not even a complete punchline, just a phrase, maybe half a punchline -- "where the Magic happens."<br />
<br />
To use it, though, we really needed a new character. The earliest sketches of Suzie, before she even had a name, were saved as "Magic Girl," based on that punchline.<br />
<br />
So, after literally months of set-up -- well, OK, weeks of set-up broken up by months of doing other stuff -- here, finally, is the strip.<br />
<br />
And for those who have commented on the Giant Plot Arc series being a downer, it does get better.<br />
<br />
But not until after it gets worse.

<br />
Rather than just creating it as a stand-alone strip, though, we've incorporated it into the plot arc. You'll notice how it deftly works in the Seth/Suzie/Clive story, while at the same time foreshadowing that ... but that would be telling. Never mind.

This kicks off a multi-week story arc that is not only the longest story we've ever done, but also will bring about changes in the Hatbag universe.<br />
<br />
The whole thing is even written in advance, save for a punchline here or there, but who needs those, right? No point in starting to change now.<br />
<br />
No promises, though, that we'll run the whole thing sequentially; we'll probably take breaks every now and then for non-plot-arc strips. <br />
<br />
And, knowing us, we can't guarantee that we won't get bored with it and drop it mid-stream. But that would involve writing new scripts instead of using the ones we've already written, so laziness is actually in favor of finishing the story.

<br />
Because we established <a href="http://comics.hatbag.net/pivot/entry.php?id=85"  target='_blank'>that he doesn't have Photoshop</a> a year and a half ago!<br />
<br />
How's that for continuity, kids? And here you probably thought we were just winging.<br />
<br />
Au contraire -- every week we consult the 200-page "Hatbag Bible" that gives the full back story and all known information for each character, and then update it with the new information from the current strip, which, of course, follows the primary story-arc guidelines we've established for the next five year. March 2009, by the way? Wow, what a doozie!<br />
<br />
OK, none of that's true. But we did keep continuity on the Photoshop thing, so that's not bad, huh?

		<title>Six Words To Rule Them All</title>
		<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://comics.hatbag.net/pivot/entry.php?id=206&amp;w=hatbag_archive" />

                <center><img src="http://alltheseworlds.net/images/six-words-to-rule-them-all.jpg" alt="Hatbag by David Hitt and Lain Hughes comic strip six words to rule them all webcomic"></center>Given the high literary quality of this week's strip, I'm sure it will come as no surprise that it owes its origins to Ernest Hemingway.<br />
<br />
Way back in the day, Hemingway wrote the following story: "For sale: baby shoes, never worn." He is said to have called it his best work.<br />
<br />
In November, WIRED did a feature where they <a href="http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.11/sixwords.html" target='_blank'>challenged celebrities to follow in Hemingway's footsteps</a> and write their own six-word stories.<br />
<br />
Early this year, David <a href="http://alltheseworlds.net/pivot/entry.php?id=3981" " target='_blank'>started a thread on his blog</a> for posting six-word stories.<br />
<br />
Which led, ultimately, to this six-word Hatbag.<br />
<br />
This strip, in turn, made us wonder what it would be like if we had always written Hatbag in this format, so we went back and modified old strips into six-words miracles of brevity.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://comics.hatbag.net/pivot/entry.php?id=205" target='_blank'>first of those strips is here</a>, followed by a series of others, each linking to the originals they're based on.<br />
<br />
Please enjoy them, with our compliments.

This week, for example, we bring you the fact that , if you would like to design a Lego-style minifig of yourself, <a href="http://www.reasonablyclever.com/mini/flash/minifig.swf" target='_blank'>you can do so at this site</a>.<br />

<br />
For us here at Hatbag, this week's news was a like a visit from an old friend. An old friend who was accused of killing people and apparently is completely losing it, but nonetheless.<br />
<br />
The Trial of the Century took place during the daily run of HATBG, and, yeah, we mined it for ideas from <a href="http://hatbag.net/dailies/092farrakhanoj.html" target='_blank'>time</a> to <a href="http://hatbag.net/dailies/095ojsurvey.html" target='_blank'>time</a>, in strips like <a href="http://hatbag.net/dailies/096ojsurveyhippy.html" target='_blank'>this</a> and <a href="http://hatbag.net/dailies/192lanceem.html" target='_blank'>this</a>.<br />
<br />
When we went back after the strip ended and did some Web-exclusive installments, we even <a href="http://hatbag.net/bonus/N2SNLboys.html" target='_blank'>revisited him again</a>.<br />
<br />
Basically, <a href="http://hatbag.net/dailies/188ojdowner.html" target='_blank'>this strip</a> just kinda summed up our relationship with the whole thing.<br />
<br />
So, yeah, welcome back, O.J. Shine on, you crazy acquitted murder suspect.
